Why does the geographic distribution of slavs have this hole? Did Romania and Hungary at some purge their slavs?

Kind of? A map of the area c. 900 AD might clarify a bit how this happens. Romanians have occupied parts of that area since Roman times (hence the name+Romance language)

so like did Slavic peoples just fail to conquer them?

Actually I think I’d rephrase this to “Romanians in Romania kept their language after being conquered by Slavs and Hungarians”
Romanians did get conquered a lot
