Why does the geographic distribution of slavs have this hole? Did Romania and Hungary at some purge their slavs?

Kind of? A map of the area c. 900 AD might clarify a bit how this happens. Romanians have occupied parts of that area since Roman times (hence the name+Romance language)

Romanians, yes
Hungarians, no — they successfully conquered the area from Romanians and Slavs around 800 CE

Also, Germans conquered a lot of that land from Slavs, which also helped cut them off
