What's China's game?
They're making some kind of play to say this.

Possibly to pressure Russia into a diplomatic solution. They are suggesting that they won't support war for much longer.

You guys are reading deeply into this when Chinese officials regularly flub the fine points of foreign affairs. This could just be a mistake on their part lol

That's possible as well but earlier today they were carefully copying Russians, now it's something else completely. The US is pressing China, and China don't want whole world economy to collapse due to a territory they don't give a damn about.

pretty sure Xi already did this

I dont think China likes how this has been going. Russia will emerge more dependent on China but far weaker.
"Pres. Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for 'maximum restraint' in Ukraine and said China is 'pained to see the flames of war reignited in Europe.'" straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia
So they are repeating to make sure message sticks. China may have dreams about world domination, but this is still not their time to challenge the US. And Americans are making that clear.

or if they're going from "calling it a war" to "carefully copying the russians" to "calling it a war" then perhaps they're incompetent at messaging (known trait) and you're desperately trying to read things from static
