Russia has made it clear that Ukrainian membership in the EU would be a red line (that's what drove the Maidan), as are a number of domestic policies it is pursuing. There was no recent movement for Ukrainian membership in NATO, which means it is a poor explanation for this war.

West will have allowed Ukraine to be brutally mauled rather than settle this with Russia in a manner that everyone could literally live with esp a Ukraine in EU not NATO. I struggle to understand why this could not have been negotiated when *no one in NATO* wanted Ukraine in NATO

Even if NATO had declared Ukraine would never join, that would not have stopped this war. This was also driven by Ukraine's political orientation and Russia losing influence. Putin even said that Ukraine would present a threat even if it didn't join NATO. 2/

Putin wanted a pretext. Remember he said he wanted to "De-Nazify" Ukraine and the NATO excuse was just that, an excuse. Ukraine has a very vast Jewish community and their President is of Jewish heritage. Putin is lonely for the USSR and is rebuilding it.

there are 360,000–400,000 Jews in Ukraine. During the 1990s, some 266,300 Ukrainian Jews emigrated to Israel as part of a wave of mass emigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union to Israel in the 1990s

i don't know how many Jews in Ukraine but they do fight the aggressor along with other locals and they are Ukrainian #1 during the war, they did not run away

"Nazi" is a term thrown around loosely. Groups like Azov Battalion are mostly ultranationalist, which attracts some antisemites, and some semites. It's not very simple for Westerners who are used to clear lines

One of the founders of the Azov Battalion is Rabbi Nathan Hazin, who also has citizenship in Israel.
