Might make sense to see USSR and Russian federation as chapters in the ongoing collapse of the Russian Empire. The Roman Empire finally finished dying 1000 years after Rome fell. 2 or 3 centuries for Russia to shrink down to 2x Grand Duchy of Moscow sized is probably fast.
