I thought the whole point was to reduce wind drag/resistance/turbulence which leads to improved performance and fuel efficiency

What are we talking, a 0.2% gain? No way it’s much compared to side mirrors, front grill, and windshield

Non-zero is all that matters. Tesla is not concerned about fuel efficiency because of gas prices but because of range which it desperately lacks.
iirc, their wheels are equally as engineered to optimize around this.

Nonzero is not all that matters. Creating a cumbersome user experience for a negligible improvement in efficiency is not a good trade off
