Pretty much any job in China is a nightmare. They follow a "996" system. 9am-9pm, 6 days a week. And if that's the minimum accepted amount, imagine requested/required overtime

I thought 996 was particular to tech in China
yeah it is peculiar to tech. it's weird because it got half-imported to Singapore, where there are a lot of credible alternatives that pay better to tech. I don't have a good explanation.

I think there is probably a connection to how consultants and finance people work 12h days too. the expectation got coded in, even though from the firm and employee's perspective it doesn't really make sense.

Oh, I had thought it was nationwide for everything. Looked it up, and the Chinese courts deemed 996 illegal last year lol, wild. Now I want to figure out what actual work hours are...

I'm Chinese. The average work week I looked up online is 49.5 hours.But a random job I found on the Internet showed a working week of 64 hours.
