Theory: new year resolutions are less about getting yourself to change and more about implicitly getting permission from those around you to change. Changing yourself and your habits randomly bugs people, and the questioning often destroys the intuitive process of exploration

I think this is sort of true, but less because the individual changing bothers others, and more that change is scary and one often needs the implicit encouragement of one's peers

Or one just needs assurance that it’s ok with them. Imo it’s often not encouragement but just acceptance that is needed. They want the change enough already So even if it wouldn’t actually bother others, people feel it would
