Support for veterans can be wearing a poppy, taking time to reflect on the sacrifices made, or, ensuring that those who have made the sacrifice to serve are properly supported (life time pension restored, significantly more access to mental health, retraining and housing). 2/
While my heart does feel appreciative when I see poppies on jackets and shirts, wearing a poppy is easy...the real work comes on November 12th when veterans are no longer the focus of the nation. We must all do better to honour the dead and those still among us. 3/3
A few years ago I went to a school ceremony for Remembrance Day. There were many new immigrant children. I suggested that, as these kids may not now any Cdn who served, they could pause to remember those impacted in their home countries. Staff told me this was only about Cdns
