Thought of registering for the SysML conference at Austin, but checked registration and its a whopping $750. This is insane: no way the costs are that much per person. I wonder what else is being subsidized by this giant price tag -- they won't say at registration time.

I am constantly thinking about and deciding against conferences because they're $800+. There's no way to be an industry researcher without an employer to sponsor and go! It's really frustrating because I have a lot of research that I think would be a good fit for these venues.

The fact that all of HCI/ML/associated fields think that the only valid "industry" work is from massive companies who will foot the bill--it really excludes those of us who don't fit that, and that's a lot of potentially really important work

I'll add that it's kinda insulting to spend years amplifying low SES populations & other underrepd data, & carve out this applied research work on my own, & constantly face salary discrimination, & then have confs dismissively act like I'm the same as some stereotypical big corp
