  2. - this is really sensitive for me as LGBT students are particularly liked to be kicked out by their families; yet apparently we are always the "wrong people" to speak to our diversity - parental edu is one kind of proxy, but it IS JUST a proxy, for cultural knowledge & support

  3. - this is not to say that firstgen is not a particular group which is revealing particularly important things to us - but like everything, WHY would you fixate on static group categories? It's not accurate, not to the majority of learners, not to the majority of people.

  4. - if you think all students have a good relationship with their parents, or financial support from their parents, you've really got more listening to do - if you think that all income paths are linear, and many families don't go from higher edu class->financial fallout, same

  5. I've seen a lot of stuff re: admissions and higher ed lately about firstgen students, which, great! But I also saw multiple comments about "the wrong people" getting support under this umbrella based on parental edu demographics. To which, OMG:

    A new watchdog report says at least one lender appears to be charging higher student loan interest rates to graduates of HBCUs or predominantly Hispanic colleges.

  7. It can be very very wearying to try to hold high standards for things in the messy world, demand evidence for learning, invest in assessing them, etc. But to have people say "oh, we love this! I tell all the other parents about it!" Aah that's just good 🙌

  8. Meta: I just finished working on a set of educational games for kids, and I was chatting with a lady at a spa about my work, and she knew the games!! & said "Oh, my kid has learnt so much from that!" 😊 It was one thing to see it in large statistics but very affirming to hear it!

  9. Research is applied prescriptively, the assumption if we TELL people what to do ("fix your implicit bias!" "don't get hurt!") we have changed it. Instead of considering the system that creates&rewards this behavior & why it's hard to change. How to protect those hurt by it.

  10. It is really unfortunate that the vast knowledge embedded in social science has been reduced to exactly what intervention science warns against: "silver bullet" over-applied concepts taken outside of any context.

  11. These are the kind of "interventions" I turn down as research projects distressingly often, where people have used something like old school priming research or "nudges" or whatever they've fixated on to claim they can impact human behavior without really putting any change in.

  16. I am not a fan of transactional gamification--"get a coin!" gamification--but I am a fan of fun, engagement, humor, that aspect of a "game". But there's more to it than fun, I wonder about the lift of being in a world of "free time," goofing off, intentionally not performance!

  18. Last week after our talk on work w/a language learning game, this student shared a great story about learning English via Cartoon Network--still thinking about the massive language learning people do via entertainment while we struggle to make edtech even mildly not-terrible

  19. And I cannot believe the number of scientists I see on here Every Day talking big about standardized test dropping without talking about any other aspect of admissions and patting themselves on the back for being evidence-driven, sorry not sorry, it is ludicrous.

  20. This is genuinely a massive concern with these admissions changes, which appear at least from the outside to be happening without any kind of deep re-construction of the rest of the application package. You *shift weight* and not necessarily in a good way.
