All I will say is prior life experience tells me this is not a tear gas canister, but instead is incendiary in nature, especially considering how and where it was deployed.

Agreed, it's producing a lot more sparks than a tear gas canister. And it looks like it was fired towards this tent/protester camp setup. It would make sense that their intention is to burn it down and push protesters back.
