Any Arabic speakers want to talk about this report that :) is "superficial and even hiding anger or sarcasm"? http://www.albany.edu/news/74747.php pic.twitter.com/3kTxoiRxDm

Like, is there a different emoticon or emoji used in Arabic for a true smile? Or is it that :) has a range of meanings & some are insincere?

I've been reading about the history of the smile in C18th France, where smiling with teeth was vulgar. 😁 would be received very diff then!

I've actually noticed a growing perception among some English speakers that :) is "passive-aggressive." Wasn't like that ten years ago.

I've noticed (and have used myself) :) as a sarcasm indicator much to the same extent as 🙃

Native English speaker and I also often find it is passive-aggressive, meant to add the appearance of sweetness!
