This falls under the discretionary spending we give @sensu employees for professional development. If you feel a particular open source project is worth contributing to because it directly helped you get better at what you do... Why not?https://twitter.com/kingersoll/status/1016803234432704512 …
And even donations to foundations that support open source projects, e.g. the Linux Foundation, aren’t tax deductible (the linux foundation is a 501c6.

So there’s not really a charitable contributions angle. You miiight be able to figure out a way to write this off as an operating loss... if you cook your books right. That’s not a selling point either.

You’re basically left trying to make the case that, “Employees having the agency to do what they feel is best for their careers within a budget facilitated by the company with oversight is a growth opportunity and learning experience.”

If I were trying to sell this, I would want to be armed with information about current conference spending, who is able to attend, how is that determined, is opportunity spread evenly across the organization, and how spreading it more evenly benefits the team as a whole.

I hope *any* of this is useful info. If you ever want to talk about this in more detail, please feel free to DM me. I’m happy to try and offer any support I can to people trying to roll stuff like this out elsewhere.
