If you are curious about the evidence (or lack thereof) consider checking out @First10EM ‘s amazing breakdown here: https://first10em.com/thrombolytics-for-stoke/ … The debate video at the end with Dr Jerry Hoffman debating a stanford neurologist is fantastic
obligatory infographic summarizing the evidence indexed at (grepmed search “tpa evidence summary”): https://www.grepmed.com/images/1330 - NINDS-II with a whopping 160 patients in each armpic.twitter.com/6n5Od3Janv
Reading them one by one. First- MAST. Used streptokinase ( not currently used). MRS improved by similar % that mortality worsened. Would at least some patients take this gamble. “I’d rather die that be disabled froma stroke”?
would you take that gamble if you knew the middle class family you are now leaving behind would also foot the ~5-10k bill?
I get nervous with this line of questioning. Probably too much for a tweet but It can become a form of coercion. “Don’t get that treatment - it will cost your loved ones too much money.”
true but i think a treatment of exorbitant costs demands a higher burden of proof for effectiveness. But as @EMNerd_ quoted in his post (https://emcrit.org/emnerd/em-nerd-behind-veil-science/ …):pic.twitter.com/X5iXfeYFvx
