Respectfully, I think this paints a slightly rosier picture than reality re: the role of SoMe, preprints, and news sites in the COVID-era. Many of us healthcare workers live in SoMe bubbles and don't see a layperson's view. 1/

We are much better at filtering out the noise and getting value from these media, but consider: - Poorly prepared preprints available directly to the public fuel conspiracy theories - Preprints with basic math errors have neg contributed to policy positions/decisions 2/

      - The whole HCQ fiasco (which is ongoing) was driven solely by non-medical folks on SoMe (with a few traditional media appearances by charlatans) - The "zentensivist" approach to ventilation that's mentioned has been adopted more rapidly than the evidence seems to warrant. 3/

The idea that voices of reason (i.e. scientists and HCWs) can successfully squash pseudoscientific nonsense online has been repeatedly proven to be untrue - in both the pre and post-COVID era. Just scan the Facebook feed of any layperson you know... 4/

Yes unfortunately most of us are tweeting to the same audience of medical professionals and very little of that reaches laypersons...
