for me getting into med school was the hard part (no mentors) which is why i fear it will only widen the gap for those who aren’t from top schools. Once i got in I knew I could compete.

It might, but using a terrible instrument to rate people shouldn't continue. If it has adverse consequences, we should work towards fixing those problems not keeping something aweful because we understand it's parameters.
