If we just need a pH, pCO2 and bicarb, then VBG is adequate. It is not good at all for oxygenation or looking at A-a gradients

In the past year as a hospitalist, I can’t remember a time we needed an ABG to make a diagnosis or guide management. I’m curious how often and for what conditions people are ordering ABGs in Hospital medicine?
