Why does every software company's web site include a chatbot? And why does that chatbot ping audibly on every single page? Has anyone in the history of ever wanted to talk to the damn chatbot?

I hate to burst folks' bubble but it's completely legal in CA to retain employees on payroll with no assigned work duties (or email or building access) for the WARN period. In effect, WARN is a minimum severance amount, paid thru your regular paychecks. This isn't a gotcha.
Quote Tweet
Hey Twitter employees getting laid off tomorrow! IMPORTANT INFO from a CA employment attorney (me): CA's "WARN" law requires Twitter to give you 60 days notice of a massive layoff. A layoff of 50+ employees within a 30 day period qualifies. I know you didn't get that notice.

"and so you're out there, tweeting up a storm, and you're at 280... You're at 280... And sometimes, you just need that extra kick for the audience, you know? But where do you go from there, you're already at 280? (beat) this one goes to 281."

Fuckin' send it, Biden! Sea change policy decision. Historic.

First: I’m pardoning all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession. There are thousands of people who were previously convicted of simple possession who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result. My pardon will remove this burden.

This only started happening to me after I donated to some 2020 campaigns. Now my email and sms are both relentless spam. I don't want to donate to *any* Dems any more since I know that will just make it even worse.
Quote Tweet
Dems, PLEASE let me unsubscribe from all text outreach lists in one fell swoop. These texts do nothing but annoy the crap out of me. I’m not going to donate based on an SMS message, and I’m also not reading your wall of text. twitter.com/karlitaliliana…

The story I was always told is that my great grandfather came to Ellis Island on someone else's passport, which was then smuggled back into Russia for someone else in the shtetyl to use next.

And if you're someone who romanticizes the pluck and bravery of your own immigrant ancestors, leaving familiar homelands to make a better life in America, but castigate contemporary immigrants with precisely the same motivation you might want to consider why that is. 🤔

I frequently get sms spam addressed to "Monique" and I don't understand it; often enough that this is clearly on a list somewhere. But I've had this number for 22 years! Practically antediluvian in cell phone terms. I'm not mad really, just... Puzzled?
"Collaborative" robots - detectors for human contact, and max pressures that humans can escape - are well-established. Chess pieces are light and easily manipulated by such robots. Incredibly irresponsible engineering to use an industrial robot in this application instead.

Which sites do you rely on to understand programming language features? (besides stackoverflow) cppreference.com is authoritative but feels aimed more at c++ implementers, not users. Search otherwise seems captured by "geeksforgeeks", w3schools, and other SEO spam.

... after what I thought were several clever ways to just dodge the question with wildcards caused `ls` to list either 0 or surprisingly more files than just the one... "abandon CLI and use the X file browser to delete it" is the only answer.

So BeReal seems to send its entire net a push not. at the same time to prompt you to take+upload a pic. How does this work at scale? When small you can prescale your AWS footprint 1000x at T-15 and scale it down 30m later. But if you are successful... Then what?

The Justice Department has announced "good faith hackers" to get a break from the government. Good news says, on . With a critical need for cybersecurity across government & the private sector, "...we need all hands on deck."

If this gets a DOM mgmt framework that is halfway sensibly pythonic I might even be able to do front-end engineering again.

I could not be more excited about PyScript! pyscript.net These demos are🤯. You can create an entire app using scientific Python libraries that runs *in the browser* with no dependencies to install, and seamlessly works with JavaScript front-end code. Game changer.

This feature story by is the most beautiful piece of writing about software I've read in three decades of computering, and right up there among the most beautiful things I've ever read about faith. Absolutely haunting.

In addition to the "wow!" factor of the jellyfish itself, I'm in love with the enthusiasm of the tweet author here

"BIGGER THAN A SOCCER BALL" I've been studying jellyfish for 12 years and this is a first for me! This stunning box jelly was spotted around Papua New Guinea, and is possibly a rare Chirodectes says @collins_noaasi! 📽️Scuba Ventures Kavieng bit.ly/3FE29tL #DailyJelly

Wtf , why don't I watch a driver come from 3mi away to pick me up only to see the app then start searching to assign me a new driver (and failing)? What was wrong with the last one you sent? Why does this happen in SF 1/2 the times I try to use your app?

I don't mind downloading an app that I need to use once to get into an event or whatever, but it *really* in no way means I wanted to be on your mailing list. Just let me do the thing I need to in peace.
People turning onto a one-way here for years have made 14th a little madcap. Your supervisor can fix this! I sent an email with some photos of the existing signs, they fwd'd to the right people, and it was addressed within 3 months. One of my more rewarding civic interactions.
