Yeah, good @Mapzen got a new home and existence. But the original users and the original data of this company have a name: It's mappers of #OpenStreetMap #opendata. Can somebody explain why #OSM is systematically ignored recent news and publications of Mapzen? /cc @randyme

OSM is always part of my personal narrative. Is your question about why OSM has difficulty attracting media attention and organizational support? Why not post the same question on the mailing lists? As the responses come in, you can read that as my answer.

Personal narrative? My question was/is (sorry my typos): Can somebody explain, why @Mapzen obviously ignores #OpenStreetMap in their recent news and publications? Can you show me any occurrence of #OSM in recent communications of Mapzen?

There's some sense if a company wants to blow it's own trumpet & not aim too much attention to a different project (that they rely on) with an uncontrollable user-base. I suppose you're expecting @mapzen & @linuxfoundation to now be more open + stronger supporter of OSM.

Randy brings up a different question... Why is OSM bad at doing PR/media itself? Answer: who is OSM?.. The OSMF? Local Chapters? OSM US? HOT? OSMF description is more about protection not promotion, so directors don't have a mandate or legal obligation to care about this.

The question is: why doesnt osm governance allow for pr and / or community engagement?

Governance in OSMF allows it, but it doesn't get done. Especially not at the top level. Biggest statements are response (e.g. Crimea). CWG exists, but has limited resources/people, and focuses more on internal/community news and announcements.

Unfortunatley we are bad at it because OSM PR team is a handfull of NON PR volounters doing PR/media in their free time. Part of it is my fault, not enough free time for CWG taksk. More PR experience would be welcome in the team.

I don't think that the lack of coverage in the media comes as a surprise to anybody that has been half awake over the last five years. That there was going to be a price to pay for painting #openstreetmap as a one trick humanitarian pony was always clear.

Drowning out any other messaging (which did exist before) with an a million times repeated appeal to a bad conscience has run its course and now we are reaping what was sown.
