A Linux kernel that includes its own Linux headers (as has been proposed on LKML), and modules gets built on startup (or on upgrade). I consider it a net loss, because as LKMs were historically forbidden in Android, GPL meant we got sources of all kernel-space.
Hm, but that's not how DKMS works, it's just a packaging/building tool that builds a specific kernel module source, against an external kernel source tree. It does not ship the whole kernel source at all.

K let's forget about DKMS. I just mean a scheme where boot.img contains a compiler and kernel headers (using https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/1067310/ …), vendor_boot.img contains source code of required drivers, and keymaster-backed fscrypt helps caching most of the builds.

boot images should never include compilers, you are doing it all wrong :)
