Is the black art of maintaining linux kernel ABI written up anywhere? Just a totally random thought I had. I've always wanted to know how this works.

I'm talking about the ABI between kernel and modules. Where you install a new kernel and don't have to recompile modules. I think I'm right in saying that this is the crap red hat sells as a feature. To be clear, I personally think it's nonsense to maintain this these days.

Yes, it's a black art, but the patches to do so are all public, look at the rh_abi.h file in the RHEL kernel for all of the details on how they do this.
