So, as @hagilani says the evidence of mask-wearing as a direct intervention to prevent #SARSCoV2 transmission is strong. You conduct trials when there is equipoise about a question. I am not sure there is equipoise on whether masks prevent/lower viral transmission. 1/

The data that @JuliaRaifman provides offer strong evidence that mask mandates work & include an event study, that looked at states with & without mandates, pre- & post periods in each. This is not just correlation, these kinds of studies can offer causal estimates of effects. 2/

As @Loretta_Torrago suggests an RCT of a mask mandate in schools may have problems in execution for a number of reasons. 3/

But bigger problem here is #DeltaVariant is highly contagious & we're seeing more & more young people getting infected & hospitalized. We know masks work (we may need N-95s, but that's another story), mandates work in other settings. What is the strong rationale for an RCT? 4/

And if masks have strong evidence of effectiveness, mandates in other settings show the same, are the dangers of exposing children to #SARSCOV2 outweighed by potential dangers of masking children? Is a trial like this even ethical? 5/

When do we have enough evidence to make decisions? What is the cost of making the wrong one? If you think you need more evidence what is the cost of obtaining it? What is the value of this new information? Would it change decision-making or just kick the can down the road? 6/

Where does skepticism end & denialism begin? I ask this because I come from the world of HIV, where key interventions were questioned way after the benefits were established. In #COVID19 we've seen similar strains of thought from Scott Atlas, Great Barrington crowd. 7/

I raise this because @GovRonDeSantis may be quoting Emily Oster, but he has been in thrall to the GB crowd for a while. Some people are looking for excuses to do what they want. DeSantis' arguments aren't about masks, mandates effectiveness but their "effects" on liberty. 8/

An RCT isn't going to convince the Governor to do the right thing. In fact, I would venture to say that the value of new information on masks is pretty low, won't change policies in many places resisting them now. So, what are these calls to "trial" mask/mandates about? 9/

Perhaps some have uncertainty about value of masks. I assume if I told you you were going to step into a room where #DeltaVariant was likely present & I gave you the choice of a mask or no mask, you would pick up the mask before you walked in. If not, I'd love to know why. 10/

It would be great not to have to do any of this. But just this week, my own county has been put on the list of those with high SARSCOV2 transmission and our mayor has instituted an indoor mask mandate. 11/

I want kids in schools in Sept. To do this, we do our best to keep them safe w low threshold interventions , among them masks, ventilation, testing. Cannot wait 'til kids can get vaccine either. But the idea that with #DeltaVariant we need none of this is wishful thinking. end/

Are there any real or even plausible dangers to children wearing masks?
