Anthony Kronman's portrait of @yale is a classic example of the paranoid style in American politics, where "America has been largely taken away from them and their kind, though they are determined to try to repossess it and to prevent the final destructive act of subversion." 1/

Read Hofstadter old piece and you can see much of the typology of his thesis operating in Kronman's new red menace: diversity on campus. 2/ https://harpers.org/archive/1964/11/the-paranoid-style-in-american-politics/ …

What is important to note is that the idea of @yale overrun by the unexcellent, administrators, culture warriors is a fantasy. Kronman sees 1968 in New Haven, except most students here are frankly pragmatists, heading for consulting, med, law school not the barricades in 2019. 3/

Since I got to @yale in 2008, first as undergrad, then grad student, now faculty, I see an inherently corporate, conservative institution, committed to liberal values, not radical ones. As one friend said to me: @Yale has had 300+ years to get stuck in its ways. 4/

For those of us who would like to see a more diverse @yale, that vision is a profoundly American one: out of many, one, e pluribus unum, not a radical plot to overturn, but to widen, open the doors to those traditionally excluded, not just as a matter of justice, but... 5/

because diversity means more kinds of experience, expertise. In the pursuit of excellence it means that @yale doesnt miss the next Ada Lovelace because she was a woman, Phillis Wheatley because she was African-American, both who wouldnt have been allowed into the Yale of yore. 6/

When I see @dacolon criticized by Steven Smith in @yaledailynews, using an attack on science, data to justify his worldview, I see an old guard saying to people of color, women, sexual minorities, stay in your lane, understand your limitations, excellence will be define by us. /7

However, what is truly exciting about being @Yale is how excellence is flourishing, extending our knowledge & human capacities w much of that work being done by faculty & students who have always had to work that much harder because of racism, sexism in institutions like this. 8/

As the late Toni Morrison said: “The very serious function of racism … is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and so you spend 20 years proving that you do." 9/

"Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says that you have no art so you dredge that up. Somebody says that you have no kingdoms and so you dredge that up. None of that is necessary.” 10/

Kronman, Smith, won't distract me as a queer HIV+ man, grandson of immigrants @Yale, they won't distract us. But they don't get a free pass to spout their paranoid-style spins on 21st century academia either, because it strikes to the heart of who we are, who belongs @Yale. end/
