So many of the assumptions we had when starting Ad Hoc turned out to be wrong. If I had to distill it down to an essential, when we started we thought we were bringing the best of the consumer Internet space to government, and that was enough to create meaningful change.

What we learned is that to be successful we had to create an organization that can do the things we do - engineering, design, research, product - successfully, but also adapt to the needs that are specific to government. Engineering, product, design, research - for government.

On the one hand there are startups, consumer Internet companies ("Silicon Valley" if you want, but I don't like that phrasing), and on the other are government contractors. The intersection of the best of those two things is where we are: government digital services.
