I generally focus on the (dismal) state of road safety in the US (37k killed a year, 4.5M injured, hundreds of billions in econ losses, mostly preventable); it's much better in our rich-nation peers, but worldwide, it's much worse. 1,350,000 killed a year.https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/road-traffic-injuries …

To be clear, the coronavirus is very bad. We need to also find a way to talk about ongoing crises.

Folks suggesting my original tweet compares the “spread” of car crashes to that of an infectious disease: no, the point is that we’ve normalized a preventable cause of death (roads/cars) because it’s familiar. Since my tweet 16 hrs ago, 2,500 more people have died on the roads.

I think we should have a total and complete shutdown of cars until we can find out what's going on

Car death lethality: 10.7/100 000 per year (US, 2013). Coronavirus: >10 000/100 000 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51214864 …, very early data!) "For perspective" car deaths remain steady whilst coronavirus infections are starting to achieve exponential growth

The death rate worldwide for traffic deaths (which is the statistic I cited) is > 18 per 100,000 population, per WHO (p. 8) https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/276462/9789241565684-eng.pdf?ua=1 … The CNN article you linked does not mention the death rate you’re claiming (or any, on a per population basis) for the virus.pic.twitter.com/ALejmbnQI5
