So today are the committee meetings for the UNC System Board of Governors
I was asked earlier this week via DM if there were any "moves" that would indicate what Board members are thinking about #SilentSham
Here are some thoughts...
First, policy options The only move that has any chance of materially affecting the outcome of this situation (e.g. mitigating criminal investigation) is moving to set aside the judgment In the context of the Board, there'd be a motion to order their attorney to file a Rule 60
Does someone make that motion? Does it get a second? How does the vote turn out? That info will let you know how seriously (or not) the BOG is taking this
My gut guess is that it won't happen, because politicians now double / triple / quadruple down before admitting they were wrong *But* there is a small glimmer of hope b/c they have the Grand Wizard's victory letter and could claim they were misled (hogwash but sufficient cover)
Any other policy creations – a task force to review the UNC Policy Manual, or some scholarship fund for black students, or really anything else at all – will be theatrics intended to stop the media outrage and nothing more
Everything else comes down to personnel "Personnel is policy," as they say in the political world

Interim President Bill Roper could be forced out early. He's just the interim anyway, so no great loss in an unceremonious firing

Womble Bond Dickinson, the outside counsel used to litigate this case (and the firm where the judge's brother works doing endowment and education law), could see its representation agreement ended or Ripley Rand specifically removed
Board Chairman Randy Ramsey – the one who signed the settlement agreement 5 days before the Governance Committee ever approved it – could be forced to step down as Chairman
David Powers (Chairman of University Governance, and former lobbyist for Womble Bond Dickinson) and Jim Holmes Jr (Chairman of Audit & Risk Management) could be stripped of their committee chairmanships and assigned to new committees entirely
