Grazier sustaining grasslands. I like big places, big animals, big ideas, big challenges, and moderately framed cattle

Hey any great recommendations on books/articles on various indigenous/native approaches to wildlife management, especially in North America? I’d love to include more in my wildlife management class!

This 2 part interview with is just excellent. Topics include managing for heterogenous range, trade offs (or not) between production and ecosystem health, importance of goal setting, and ecological humility. I really recommend listening.

It seems like a lot of Christians (and I know there are many, man gestures of Christian belief) feel that the government should somehow be exempt or otherwise held to different standards from what Jesus said about right/wrong, power, etc and I would like to understand why

Very sincere question for Christians out there - what’s the scriptural / theological basis for not holding a State (government, or its leaders) to Jesus’ commandments about love, peace, enemies, etc?

Sunday service: trying my hand at some micro-scale land restoration. These rocks may be in all the wrong places, but I figure it’s better than none at all. Long live the soil.

Reoccurring themes in sustainable ag/food discussions that I think are fallacies: 1. either/or framing when talking 🌱& animal ag (they’re connected & dependent on one another) 2. Viewing people as separate & apart from nature, thus land/ecosystems would be better without humans

We’re making some grazing plans today and I am reminded that the concept of stock days per acre may just be the most critical tool on the ranch

And I did. And that was that. I’m not trying to be precious, but given how rarely these little redemption stories make it on Twitter, I feel the need to share that people say and do things that could fracture relationships *and then repair them* ALL the time.

The next morning my partner took him aside and told him what he’d said while under the influence and suggested he apologize. He was deeply embarrassed and offered a heartfelt apology to each of us at lunchtime. “I’m very sorry for what i said. I hope you can forgive me.”

One time recently a friend of ours had too much to drink and started telling dirty jokes. I didn’t mind, until he started to include myself and the only other woman on our crew in the joke, making our own bodies part of the punchline. Groan. Not okay. Very uncomfortable silence.

Sometimes when I am working with a colt and feel intimidated I remember that my big sis with 0 horse experience was given a mature, unstarted Arabian when she was 14 and turned him into a trail horse because no one was around to tell her she couldn’t.

Alertness is the hidden discipline of familiarity. (David Whyte) I think he was talking about marriage, but this is also true of land and livestock stewardship. So much of our work is noticing the baselines as they shift.

Only 4% of the original tallgrass prairie ecosystem is left in N. America. Most was converted to cropland, which means lot of soil C was lost & altered water cycling/purification. Largest tallgrass prairie contiguous area remaining is Flint Hills/Osage region of KS/OK.

I’m on a new ranch with new fence that is very nice but its wires are too high/low, so I’m putting in a few crossings pretty much every time I go out. Hopefully in time the animals will be able to flow more freely again.

The selection pressures wildlife encounter these days produce fascinating learned behavior. I just watched 25 elk leap over a cattle guard. The last one, a ~9 month calf (large!), shimmied under an iron fence that was 18” off the ground.
