I cannot imagine why anybody would opt to NOT do the mcu2 retrofit after this experience (current component pricing around ~$1600 from junkyards). You only need: MCU2, IC2 and the new tuner (can skip that even, e.g. I don't have it yet, but then updates are complicated).

1. dump gateway config and ecu commands key file (also useful to get all sqlite DBs) from MCU1 2. transfer gwconfig onto mcu2 gw and the other files onto mcu2 cid. 3. take mcu1 and ic1 out 4. put mcu2, ic2 and new tuner in 5. turn on the car and perform firmware redeploy.

yes, straight plug and play (but only on cars with AP2 or on Model X with AP1)

If you do it with aftermarket parts and it becomes popular and it gets Tesla attention, could they detect it and blacklist the cars from supercharger for example?

Aftermarket parts? May be. Genuine Tesla parts? Lots of lawsuits would ensure (some already happened on similar grounds and were settled, or so I was told)

As soon as I’m able to upgrade to MCU2, I’m doing it. We have an MCU1 Model S and an MCU2 Model X. It’s like the turtle and the hare, except in this case the turtle doesn’t ever catch up.
