I spoke up for retaining services, not increases rates on struggling local small businesses. We cannot pick the money out of the air, we cannot magic it up, it doesn't grow on trees. With a deficit of 39 million there will be cuts in services

Tonight's Local Property Tax motion proposed by Greens & Labour would have generated €12 million for services. Saying it massively penalises the poor is inaccurate. With +5%, property valued at: 150-200k increases LPT by 30 cents a week 950k-1mill increases LPT by €1.82 a week

It's massively disappointing that our motion failed when we desperately need funding for services. +5% would have gone a long way to maintain service levels. The other side is proper central funding which I have written to to meet us on & I hope he will soon.

Surely the lesson of 2020 is just how important public services are to our city. This shouldn't be yet another year where Dublin City Council cuts taxes for the wealthy at the expense of public services, yet that's exactly how the vote tonight went: 34 to 21. Here's my speech:

  10. Productive meeting today with in Naas. Some exciting, innovative proposals discussed which will undoubtedly generate jobs and income for the Exchequer (esp in these difficult Covid times) but to bring to fruition will require Gov. backing & support.

  12. The student contribution fee was €800 in 2008. Ten years later, it is €3,000. Over 10 years, governments have disenfranchises poor and low-income families from accessing third-level education. We MUST do better to provide affordable education.

34-21, Dublin City Council votes to cut property tax again. To disprortionately benefit wealthy homeowners, the tax will mean €12m less for the council's funds. We're already facing a €39m deficit thanks to COVID - we didn't need this on top of it.
