Aside from the cool historical stuff going on here, eels are fascinating in so many ways. World eel populations are also in steep decline, with many endangered or critically endangered. A rent in modern eels would be a steep rent indeed.https://champagnewhisky.com/2012/12/05/elvers-economics-and-the-decline-of-the-amerian-eel/ …

So true! American eels are in trouble (though not technically endangered), & European eels are critically endangered. They're also the most heavily illegally trafficked animal in the world (both in terms of value & numbers). A suitcase full of baby eels will get you about $100k.

So may great questions! I'll try to get to them in coming days. But, briefly: There were LOTS of eels in medieval England. People ate them, traded them, wrote about them, & paid taxes in them. In 1200 there were 500k+ eels being paid in in-kind taxation each year. Here's a map!pic.twitter.com/tHlHqDCDKZ

I don’t know what to do with this information, but please rest assured that this is all I will be starting conversations with for the next few weeks.

It would take a lot of binds to build the cathedral of Ely!pic.twitter.com/4CwFlUsUFr

Maybe? There's a record for Ramsey Abbey buying Barnack stone from Peterborough Abbey for 4000 eels per year c. 1050. That sometimes gets mistaken for
@Ely_Cathedral , which is also made of Barnack stone. They might have paid with eels, too...but the extant charter isn't for Ely. - Još 2 druga odgovora

I hate the very idea of eels, but having recently watched a bunch of tv about Russian serfs, I’m very interested in how “rent” could be paid. Fascinating, esp the idea of why it was called a “stick.”

I never used to think much about eels, and I suppose if I had I would have thought they were kinda disgusting. But it turns out that they're really cool fish, with an amazing life cycle. And they play a very important role in human histories, too!
