the bishop of orlando is also the bishop of the moon, due to a canon law that says "any newly discovered territory would fall under the bishopric from whence the discovering expedition departed". his is therefore the largest catholic diocese, at over 14,000,000 square miles

People have been eating eels for a very long time. The ancient Greeks loved them; eels are the only fish mentioned by name in Homer's poems, & the fourth-century BCE poet Eubûlus wrote in several places about the delights of eating them. He especially loved eels wrapped in beets.pic.twitter.com/DcmOwDbJdU

People sometimes send me their eel memories, like about the tame eels in their grandparents' pond, or how they used to catch eels to sell to local pubs. These are great, but I want more! If you have an English eel story to share, you can tell me here: https://forms.gle/XvdT6Lwb6pqsY5oH9 …pic.twitter.com/0NhWsFnOPJ

My sister (
@StinkyRude) sent this to me today, but with reservations; she was worried that it might be too esoteric. As if that were a real thing! Very much looking forward to reading thispic.twitter.com/3KQ3yySq5F

The 5 yr old asked me today how Santa gets down tiny chimneys, & I said that the saint turns himself into a semi-liquid ooze (like slug slime) then slides into a house & puddles on the floor before reforming. And I'm frankly a bit weirded out by this new vision of Santa.

The 5 yr old’s report card notes that he is an “intense student.” Prettttty sure that was meant as a good thing.

I got a box of Lusty Monk Mustard in the mail today from Kelly Davis (
@lustymonk), and oh my god it’s the best mustard ever. I have to go buy bratwurst now just to have something fitting to eat with it. Also the packaging is excellent!pic.twitter.com/6uEuDjfcsN

In 1250 the abbot of Tupeholm sued the nuns of Stykeswald for 3 years back eel-rents (a total of 450 eels). The abbot settled for a monetary payment, and forgave the rent going forward. The Tupeholm monks got a bit of coin, and the Stykeswald nuns got to keep their eels. Win-Win!pic.twitter.com/Jqj9XdTjoe

The Mapping Manuscript Migrations site is up and running! Track 1000s of medieval manuscripts by origin, owner, author, title, etc., & visualize their journeys. How am I going to get any work done today?! Congrats

Scientists & environmentalists often call for taking politics out of fisheries in favor of science-based management, but that's a political choice too. Science provides valuable insights & tools, but it's not apolitical

For clarity here, Pope's using "science" to mean knowledge, or learning, broadly (he's leaning into the Latin), rather than science as a separate subfield of knowledge. So don't think you're off the hook, fellow humanities folks.

"Having an eel by the tail" is an axiom for taking a doomed approach to an endeavor. In 1729, Alexander Pope used the phrase to scoff at people who believe they can understand a book just by reading its index. He smirked that this practice "holds the eel of science by the tail."pic.twitter.com/rdMFwv3AbZ
