I suppose it's out of the question why they aren't hiring an appropriate amount of people to staff the plant without working people to death

Holding my tongue, waiting for the Labor press to weigh in - but this union looks weak af

I am very curious about this situation. I want to learn more from people IN Topeka. Local and internal politics matter a lot. Hopefully in 2 years, the Frito-Lay workers can do better.

I missed any reporting on how things became this bad to begin with. Workers saying they’ve gone decades without raises— how long has this plant been organized? What were the old contracts like? What’s up with the local’s internal politics?
-
That plant has been organized since 1974. In the early 2000’s the size of the plant workforce exploded and continues to grow. It’s a right to work state, approx 300 non-union employees of 900 total. Frito union busting there is aggressive.

#ILWU longshoremen won a 6 hour work day in 1934, but they never have had 6 hour shift except the hoot owl shift which pays the equivalent of 8 hours pay. However, due to the strength of the union and greed of the employers a lot of jobs are work 4 get paid 8, aka 4&4.pic.twitter.com/enyqMxc4l5Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa
