Just started re-reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time in decades, and Peter Jackson made a good choice not including Tom Bombadil in the films. Man, that guy is insufferable.

His character is fascinating as it seems he's pretty amazingly powerful. But insufferable is a great way to describe him.

It’s interesting that he was also left out of the Rankin-Bass animated version as well.

The only part I liked about that whole sidetrack was the barrow-wights. Even so, having Aragorn toss them the blades instead worked okay.

He adds nothing to the arc of the story, and does not appear in any of Tolkien’s other work. Strange.

He's in a couple of poems: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Tom_Bombadil … I heard of the book when I was a Tolkien nut, but never felt inclined to read it.
