25 years ago I got a job at a computer bookstore. We were allowed to borrow and read the books; so I read through all the language books, especially those with animals on the covers. 10 years ago I had a little language of my own printing hello world. Tonight this arrived:pic.twitter.com/KlGti5ochi

Thank you for showing the world that building safer software is something that doesn't need to come with runtime costs (although, I still want someone to make actors a thing)

Funny enough, the zero cost obsession really wasn't me. I was ok paying some runtime costs. We just got overrun by C++ folks :P (Also it had actors early on. We removed 'em. Long story. Really long.)

Ah - I was wondering if that was more of a Servo thing. I only encountered Rust around its public release around 2012 (?) (Oh, I know.. hence the reference. Also read your recent blog post re ideas for future programming languages)

Not just Servo, but like .. finding our niche. We tried to be all things to all people for a while, realized that we'd always be under-serving the lowest level folks unless we shed green threads, GC, etc.

So what is Rust all about, really? Is it "dragging C++ hackers half way to ML?" I feel like I'm half in the target market and half not. I do spend all day every day trying to make system programming simpler. I don't care for C++ though and I don't have strong feelings on ML.

Not dragging, more like throwing C/C++ folks (including myself) a life raft wrt. safety. The ML-isms -- mostly just sums and patterns -- are just .. like basics of modern living? Safety is the thing. C++ niche, but memory safe, including race-free multithreading. That's hard.

Basically I've an anxious, pessimist personality; most systems I try to build are a reflection of how terrifying software-as-it-is-made feels to me. I'm seeking peace and security amid a nightmare of chaos. I want to help programmers sleep well, worry less.

There is, of course, a category of programmers who either don't feel like software is a terrible chaos nightmare, or even enjoy the thrill of it. To them, presumably Rust feels more like a cold wet blanket than a warm comforting one.
