Beyond wasting people’s talent and happiness, this perspective also reinforces the notion that there’s no such thing as technical expertise in a non-management worker: that seniority (thus decision authority) naturally accrues with distance from coding.

It's certainly not for everyone, but I do think there's some benefit to leadershipping, when one has more good ideas than time to implement them. Being a manager isn't always the most productive use of my time, but I tell myself there's a multiplier effect spread across my team
-
I’m not claiming leadership doesn’t exist or help in some cases. I’m just claiming that “not for everyone“ part. For some of us it’s really really not for us, and trying to make it be so is forcing square peg in round hole. Best case quit, worst case burn out and/or ruin project.
-
Yeah, totally agree. I went 20 years as purely an IC, it took noticeable effort to rewire my brain to be able to defocus sometimes, still not sure it was worth it.

Was lucky to work in places that don’t force you to lead people to actually advance, but it never looked like easier way forward… always questioning my decision to stay away from managerial path…

We solved this with the dual management and architect tracks. The oversight of the people and execution of the SDLC is done by VP R&D and architectures, technologies, and matching the tech soln to the business need is the Senior Architect's role.
-
That way the tech people get to stay very tech, and the more managerial types get to organize projects and people. Very much Myrhical Man Month thinking.

This happened to me at Rackspace, two years ago. Within the span of a month, three senior test engineers who had each taken leadership roles left the company. I was literally the only one left. The burnout almost cost me my life. I will not make that mistake again.
-
To be fair to Rackspace, they never intended for any of this to happen, and they were very understanding when I made the decision to leave the company myself. Still, beware of any mismatches between engineer and promotion role. The result may not be as expected.
