'imbed' and 'embed' are terms I think I want to have slightly different meanings in a topological sense (they are usually regarded as entirely synonymous): in the case of the shoe in mud, you get an imprint, but a shoe removed from a box, you don't, respectively.

relatedly: the distinction between froth and foam: in foam, there are discrete regions, what would have been bubbles, in froths, there is other structure, and there may be pure mathy contexts where this matters (which we'll get to)
