While John Horton Conway was the most famous for the Game of Life, I see at least four different references to his work in this animation (although some of these references are maybe a bit sketchy). How many can you see?pic.twitter.com/HU11KBq52e

is there a way to futz with the standard game of life rules here so pentagons act like squares, locally?

Here 4 neighbors for a 5gon works like 3 neighbors for a square. How do you define "act like squares locally"? They are rare enough that they do not seem to destroy the general look. Would be cool if it was possible for gliders to always survive 5gons, but I do not think it is.

There are ten ways a 5gon has 9 neighbors, if you forget one.
