Skin is an interesting solution to the durability problem. Arthropods took the obvious route: have a durable outer surface. Fish scales split the balance by being durable but also shedding. Now skin and fur are pretty wild. Constant micro shedding. Not durable, but self-healing.

The shedding is a problem for personal and home hygiene though! It'd be much easier to keep a dust free home if we had exoskeletons. It's even hard to automate methods for cleaning skin and fur. If we had exoskeletons we could just go through a kind of car wash and get buffed.

Replying to @graveolens @futurebird
To be fair: neither am I, although I do feel funny about the architectural routes that my body took which made ambidextrous writing possible. Those I would like to keep.
