do I need the machinery of the calculus of variations?
g(z) is, let's say a polynomial, z is complex t1, t2 are points in the z plane. I want a procedure to find a path in the z plane which minimizes the integral of the phase from g(t1) to g(t2). The phase at g(t1) and g(t2) can be different.
