“Peer-reviewed articles are not free to produce” — that's right, they are not. Writing such an article takes considerable effort in addition to the effort we (industrial & academic scientists) put into the actual research. Good results do not guarantee a good article. [2/7]

Besides being well-written/readable, the article must be reviewed by other experts, to verify its quality & suitability. Publishing venues also have preferences topic-wise, style-wise, etc, so an article might not be equally acceptable at different venues. [3/7]

“publishers […] make significant investments […] to finance the peer-review” is a false claim. Listen, I have reviewed ~10 articles just this month officially (and a dozen more unofficially to make free videos reexplaining them to a wider audience), and never got paid. [4/7]

Over the course of the years, I have reviewed hundreds of articles, and never got paid for it, this activity is traditionally viewed as free. Some of it was done on my employers' time, most on my own time, and it was done as a service, because others do the same for me. [5/7]

There is also the reviewing process of setting deadlines, sending reminders, etc — which is also handled by scientists as a service to the community without any reward attached. Publishers offer no support in any of this. [6/7]

So scientists do their research, write their papers, make their PDFs conform to the required format, review each other's papers, — all as a part of their regular jobs. That is why we want such papers that we produce, to be accessible and readable. By everyone. For free. [7/7]
