Since corps use Slack/Hipchat that is less friction for (new-to-opensource) devs than IRC. I had more than one dev refuse to participate in
@OpenStack because of IRC instead Slack! By using video, Google groups, etc. they already planted themselves firmly in the walled garden -- -
I would say anyone how refuses to work on something because of their tooling is being quite shortsighted. What was the reasoning? Other than IRC is hard, or I want gifs.

I can understand that some people prefer slack. But tying opensource to any closed tool, is ceding some control of your open group to that closed entity. Optional, fine. Required, that’s just not ok. Imagine if this debate were making your doc format Word files, eg.
