Henderson had 100 SBs in 1980, but his rate of attempts was vastly lower: Just 126 attempts out of 343 opportunities, or 36.7 percent. If he'd attempted at the same rate as 1982, with the same CS rate as '82, he'd have had 198 steals in 1980. (2/2)

A few more steal attempt rates (by percent): Lou Brock, 1974: 50.5 Vince Coleman, 1986: 54.6 Billy Hamilton, 2015: 57

One more while I'm on this: Jose Canseco's rate for 1988, when he got thrown out 16 times in the process of getting his 40-40 season, is surprisingly low: He attempted to steal just 23 percent of the times he had the opportunity.

Rickey scored over twice as many runs as every member on the 82 team except Dwayne Murphy. Probably why they still finished in 5th place.

What counts as an opportunity? Just being on first base? Does being on second count? If he had a runner in front of him at the next base? First base when the batter put the ball in play before he could try to steal? If he got picked off does that count?
