Just a heads up that if you see someone wearing a face mask, it may not mean they are contagious a) some chronically ill people wear face masks to protect ourselves from germs; b) some chronically ill people wear face masks because fragrance/perfume = migraine trigger.

also hilariously sad that people think we can just “call the ADA” as if it’s an organization that’s at the ready to solve access issues

I don’t know who needs to hear this but accessibility isn’t special treatment... the bar is not even at the bare minimum for Disabled folks at this point. 🙃

What Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley just did was come out of the closet about her hidden disability. I’m proud of her for it because black women keep our disabilities secret out of fear of ableist judgment and racism. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease.

Thread on the grueling & exhausting processes by which disabled people must prove they are disabled to receive benefits & to maintain benefits over the years. The State has time & endurance on its side.

Traveling with a disability is extremely expensive. We can’t just rent a cheap Airbnb, we can’t backpack random places without planning, we can’t get on any cheap flight. We need to plan accessibility needs & those are costly. This deters a lot of disabled people from traveling.

Happy new year 🎉 let's start 2020 with a friendly reminder to event, conference & meeting organizers to NEVER ask people to legitimize your initiatives without compensation. It should NEVER cross your mind to ask disabled ppl to give of their time & expertise for free.

Now seems like a good time to promote ’s anti-filicide toolkit. It’s designed for advocates, but I think it also has good information for journalists about common narratives that do harm.

When we frame these murders as love, we are essentially justifying the killings of disabled and ill people and that’s why they keep happening. Things like these, despite intent, help frame the way we view disabled and ill people.

Don’t disclose people’s diagnoses/disability w/o their permission! I can’t believe this has to be said. Many ppl don’t disclose bc of safety reasons. Respect that♿️
