Prof. Grace Lavery’s Tweets

and with this, I’m logging out and changing my password. Twitter is full of idiots who think the government should tell them whether they’re lesbians, and it brings out both my sadistic debater-kid side and my “spiritual” soul-saving side. I don’t like myself on here, so I’m off.

It is, quite comfortably, the most substantial work of scholarship I’ve produced to date; people will (I hope) find much to disagree with, and perhaps others will feel galvanized by its performances of and demands for joy, justice, and healing.

PLEASURE AND EFFICACY draws together and expands feminist and queer essays I’ve been working on over the last decade. There’s a bunch of Victorian literature—realism is the book’s aesthetic mode—and introduces new work on stoner neo-noir, Buffalo Bill, Kevin Rowland, and others.

Lastly, it aims to respond in meaningful ways to the ubiquity of depressive reasoning in queer theory and, perhaps especially, trans studies. My bottom surgery *might* make me happy, who knows? It’s unnecessary and superstitious to decide in advance that it won’t.

And it *also* critiques (as many of its readers have noted, it’s a bolshy book) the Lacanian approach to psychoanalysis as pure theory, seeking to rehabilitate the (strangely) unpopular therapeutic side of Freudian thought.

It also pushes back against one dominant trend in queer thought over the last couple of decades: what I have called the “romance of intractability,” which tells us that “we are not (yet) queer” (Muñoz) or similar. We are, as it goes, p queer, and the mystification doesn’t help.

But it also wants to challenge aspects of trans feminist thought that I think do trans people more harm than good. These include the notion of gender identity itself, which is an idea forced on trans people by the medical monopolization of care. We can do without it.

It obviously sets its face against the so-called gender critical ideology, whose singular obsession is the metaphysical question “what is a woman,” and its only politics is grounded on sexual ontologies: “sex-based rights.” These, as many have commented, are anti-feminist goals.

Friends, I’ve been back on Twitter the last few days, because I have this book to promote. But it isn’t worth the ball-ache, so I’m going to do a bit more promotion now and then log off. Please feel free to follow me on instagram, at .lavery.pangolin

Okay, so, I’m forty now. As of just this minute. Survived in a world that often seemed to want to delete me, a sentiment I have occasionally shared. Thanks to those many people who have helped me reach this first blissful blush of middle-age. 🥳

Popping back in to grieve with those mourning the departure of the internet’s most conspicuous twerp. Jesse Singal may have been credulous, vapid, and cruel, but he was also very stupid. I hope he finds solace leading offline campaigns against marginalized groups. R. I. P. 💋

I suspect I’m going to stay off notwithstanding—being off of the hell site has felt great, and so much productivity!—but I’m glad that the archive is now up and searchable, especially given the information around GC abuse of grievance procedures that I posted over the last year.
