correct me if i'm misunderstanding you say you have two choices: A: have 90% accurate beliefs about world B: have 99% accurate beliefs about world, but your utility function is massively modified you're saying a person should ALWAYS choose B?

not always I'm sure but if the preferences that get modified are the ones you have because you're flat out mistaken about stuff I think yeah it's reasonable to choose to change them!

but you are claiming that empathy changes your values in some way IN ADDITION TO the value change that normally happens upon improving belief accuracy ie that it is NOT completely reducible to a belief update

let me make the choices more clear: A: have 90% accurate beliefs about world + values are updated as a result of more accurate beliefs B: have 99% accurate beliefs about world + values are updated as a result of more accurate beliefs + value drift
