Oh god, I'm so fucking dumb :( I just put it back on the ground. Now the bird is going to starve or freeze or get eaten by a different predator. It would have been better if I had let the cat do it quickly. There was a birdhouse. Why didn't I think to put it in the birdhouse? :(
I think it's a fledgling rather than a nestling, based on the feathers. So maybe it's insulated enough to survive the night? And if the parents look after it and feed it, then it just needs to avoid predators and it will be flying in a few days. I hope.
