"Is Middle Earth flat?" It USED to be. But after the Numenoreans tried to invade Aman (the Blessed Realm), Eru made the Earth round, keeping Aman and Avalon on the flat-earth part. Elven sailors are still able to sail the "straight way" and reach Aman, but humans cannot.
