Last year income inequality rose as incomes amongst poorer households fell. - the expected bit of that: the removal of £20/wk UC uplift hit lower income households - the unexpected bit: the ONS found wages growing amongst richer households but falling amongst poorer ones

Very sad news. Tom Nairn, one of the UK's most gifted leftwing thinkers died yesterday, aged 90. Most of his books were published by Verso and his most coruscating essays by New Left Review. More on him will be be written by others including myself. In the meantime, read him.

My constituency of Liverpool Walton is the most deprived in England. It has not received a penny of the Levelling Up Fund. Of the 80 successful bids in England, only half are in the 100 most deprived areas. The Prime Minister's affluent constituency, however, received £19m.

Over the same period, the proportion of adults who own multiple dwellings has doubled. Around 7% of adults in the UK now own multiple homes – either to rent out, as a second or holiday home or for another reason. The share owning ANY homes has fallen from 62% to 55%.
Two pie graphs showing the tenure all adults in England live in in 2000 and 2020, including whether they own additional dwellings beyond the one they live in (in England) and whether they live with a home owner. The share of adults who own only the home they live in fell from 58% to 48%, while the share owning multiple dwellings increased from 3% to 7%. The share renting privately doubled from 10% to 19%, the share social renting fell from 17% to 14%, and the share living with an owner remained at 12%.

Shocking. A report by a United Nations expert - ‘Tory ethos is deliberate, harsh and uncaring.’ ‘The lives of the least well off are condemned to be nasty, brutish and short’. Tories - taking the Great out of Britain a policy at a time.

The most satisfying phrase in the English language. (When I say ‘another’, I of course mean ‘final’ but we’ll have to see if my editor agrees…)

Bojack Horseman is the modern Don Quixote: a middle aged man seeking redemption through stories, and getting really mad at everyone around him when they don’t behave as they would in a fairytale/sitcom.
