    So moved & inspired by the words of my friend . I pledge to honor the service of veterans like him by asking hard questions of my government & actively upholding our democracy.

    I usually mumble "you're welcome" when someone thanks me for my service. This Veteran's Day, I'll try to say "you're welcome to ask me the hard questions." I wrote about it and got it syndicated, incl here.

    The race is over, the work begins.

    As Malcolm X described, black people were “freed” into the “American nightmare” of economic & racial inequality, of excess death, of injustice w/o accountability. We must reverse these conditions to be a true democracy. The work doesn’t stop or begin w/ any one election.

    NPR has very accurate and informative headlines.

    BREAKING: No winner has been declared, but Trump again falsely claimed victory. That's wrong. Trump also baselessly, recklessly claimed the election is being "stolen" and "rigged." He's losing his lead in some states because the vote is being counted.

    Read the whole thread. Important analysis of police response to protests in NY from my colleagues

    Last night New York police appear to have “kettled” protesters in with nowhere to go. After chanting “let us disburse” over and over again, NYPD still arrested people, body-slamming & tackling some to the ground who appear to have posed no threat.

    Actually, empirical evidence shows that implementing decriminalization and supporting harm reduction strategies like safe consumption sites reduces overdose deaths by upwards of 30%. So yes, decriminalization of drugs literally saves lives.

    Californians loud & clear, voted to stay the course of justice reform focus on rehabilitation, healing, & real community safety. Passed Prop 17, restoring the vote to formerly incarcerated ppl. Defeated Prop 20, which wld have increased use of prison. Onward! There’s more to do.

    Any politician can say whatever they want. Trusted local election officials are doing their jobs. Millions turned out yesterday, voted early or sent ballots to communicate the will of the people. Now we need to be patient. Thanks for this
